Why Black-Owned Businesses Matter in Albany, NY (And Why Your Support Changes Everything)

July 28, 2026

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you walk through downtown Albany on a Tuesday morning. The light hits the brownstones just right, and for a moment, the city feels small… quiet… intentional.

But beneath that quiet, there’s a pulse. A rhythm of creators, dreamers, and doers building something that belongs to all of us.

Here at Indulge In A Scent, we talk a lot about the "soft life." We talk about stillness. We talk about the micro-rituals that save our sanity: like lighting a hand-poured candle after a day of "happy exhaustion." But a soft life isn't just about what happens inside your four walls. It’s about the community that holds you.

Supporting Black-owned businesses in Albany isn't just a transaction. It’s a heartbeat. It’s how we ensure that the beauty, grit, and soul of our city continue to thrive.

The Reality of the Numbers

Did you know that only about 3.5% of businesses in New York State are Black-owned?

It’s a small number, isn't it? Especially when you consider the vibrant energy that Black culture pours into the Capital Region. When you choose to spend your dollars at a Black-owned shop, you aren't just buying a product. You’re helping to tip that scale. You’re building generational wealth. You’re telling the world that our stories, our hands, and our expertise matter.

A New Home for Legacy: Community Support in Motion

If you’ve driven down Washington Ave lately, you’ve probably noticed the historic building at number 141. It’s the former University Club: a stately, Colonial Revival-style structure that was once a space where Black faces were rarely seen.

Today, spaces like this remind us what’s possible when a city makes room for Black entrepreneurship to be seen, supported, and sustained.

Organizations like the Capital Region Chamber help create a broader ecosystem where local businesses can connect, grow, and be part of a stronger regional economy. And that kind of support matters.

It’s about creating places where opportunity feels real… where community and commerce can meet… and where Black entrepreneurs have more room to build, breathe, and belong.

The Ecosystem of Excellence

Supporting local means knowing your neighbors. Albany is home to incredible Black-owned businesses and community anchors that make the city feel more connected, more vibrant, and more like home.

From restaurants and retail shops to creative studios and service-based brands, these businesses bring style, care, culture, and innovation into everyday life. They create jobs. They keep local dollars circulating. They make space for stories, traditions, and fresh ideas to live side by side.

And alongside them, organizations and community institutions across Albany help strengthen the foundation that small businesses need to grow.

When these businesses win, Albany wins.

Why Indulge In A Scent is Part of the Shift

I started Indulge In A Scent because I needed a way to breathe. As a Black woman juggling the weight of the world, I realized that we often forget to claim our own peace.

We are a Black woman-owned small business right here in Albany, and we take our craft seriously. When you buy one of our mood-boosting candles, you’re getting more than just a scent. You’re getting a premium coconut apricot wax blend.

We chose coconut apricot wax because it’s the height of luxury. It burns cleaner, stays fragrant longer, and is far superior to standard soy wax. It’s our way of saying that you deserve the very best: not just "good enough."

Small Moments, Big Impact

Supporting Black-owned isn't about grand gestures. It’s about the micro-rituals of your daily life.

Maybe it’s choosing a local Black-owned spot instead of a chain.
Maybe it’s showing up to community events and markets where small businesses gather and share what they’ve built.
Or maybe it’s lighting a mood-boosting candle at the end of a long day and letting your shoulders soften.

Each of these choices creates a ripple.

Supporting us means the light stays a little longer. It means our daughters see themselves as CEOs. It means the "mental loudness" of the world gets a little quieter because we know we are supported by a village that looks like us.
