How I Run a Business With an Autoimmune Disease

Real talk, small wins, and why I built Indulge In A Scent for women like me.

Some days I wake up ready to tackle everything — orders, content, family, work. And other days? It feels like even brushing my hair takes effort. That’s the reality of living with an autoimmune disease. It doesn’t ask permission. It doesn’t always warn you. But over time, I’ve learned how to keep moving — gently, slowly, and always with intention.

I created Indulge In A Scent not just to sell candles or body care. I built it as a way to give myself — and other women like me — a place to pause. To breathe. To feel human again, even if just for five minutes.

Learning to Listen to My Body

Before I started this business, I pushed through everything. Exhaustion, pain, brain fog — I kept going because that’s what we’re taught to do. But autoimmune disease doesn’t care about deadlines or hustle. It forced me to slow down. At first, I hated it. Now, I realize it saved me.

On hard days, I’ve had to learn how to pivot. I batch my work. I rest when my body demands it. I light a candle during packaging or roll on a calming blend before I check emails. These little things help me stay grounded — they remind me I don’t have to “perform” to be productive. I just need to be present.

Why Scent Matters

When I was going through a particularly rough season with my health, scent became my anchor. A certain blend could lift my mood. A gentle mist could help me breathe deeper. The moment I lit a candle, I felt like I had some control again — like I was doing something for me.

That’s what I want every woman who uses my products to feel: peace, even if the day is a mess. Even if your body is tired. Even if you’re overwhelmed. You still deserve moments of calm.

My Message to You

If you’re living with an autoimmune disease, or if you’re simply stretched thin and trying your best — I see you. You don’t need to earn rest. You don’t need to wait for a vacation to feel good in your own space.

I’m not perfect at this. I still forget to slow down sometimes. But every product I make is a reminder — for both of us — that self-care is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. And you’re allowed to choose it.
